Farhan Akhtar loves pushing the envelope. Just before he lands in the cit for a concert, the actor-filmmaker-singer gets candid about the new phase in his life, films, family and more.
He's the Jack of all trades, and master of a few, but says its difficult to prioritise his passions. "Right now, I want to explore myself musically and connect with fans," he says. The Pink Floyd fan will be collaborating with Deep Purple for a live show in Nepal for the first time on March 15. His band, Farhan Live, comprising talented musicians, who are also the actor's old friends, is attempting to give indie rock a makeover with new-age sounds infused with latest technology, like live tweets during the performance. Their repertoire for Bengaluru will have a few U2 covers and songs from Rock On and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara along with a poem that Farhan wrote for One Billion Rising.
Speaking of alliances, Farhan is enamoured by his dad, Javed Akhtar's ability to talk through his songs. "His sensitivity and clarity of thought is inspirational. To reflect and adapt to characters of a film that belongs to a different generation is fascinating," he opines. So will we see similar musical pieces from him as well? "I tend to think more in English. But I would love to pen my thoughts and team up with someone who can translate them in a different language, like Urdu," he adds. His much-awaited film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, is almost done and Farhan considers himself exceptionally lucky to have bagged such a role. "To be able to put myself in the shoes of someone like Milkha is scary, challenging, motivational and exhilarating," he explains. "When you are honest to the charac ter's core, everything falls in place," he says adding, "The mental state of mind and your physique as well."
After working on a movie as demanding as Bhaag..., Farhan is letting off some steam with his romcom, Shaadi Ke Side Effects with Vidya Balan. "It is about a couple and their married lives." We ask the doting father and husband his secret to a happy marriage - "The important funda in any relationship is to listen to the other person, with an open mind, heart and ears," he advises.
With wife Adhuna and two kids, he loves going on vacations. Incidentally, Leh (where most of his movie was shot) happens to be one of his favourite holiday destinations but, "Whenever I am free, you will find me with my kids," he informs. So are his girls interested in showbiz? "They are too young now and need to enjoy their childhood. What they intend on doing when they grow up is entirely their decision," he says.
