From Gangs to Ugly

He gave a memorable background score for Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur — and now music director G.V. Prakash is all set to work with him again on his upcoming film, Ugly.

“It was wonderful working with Anurag – quite apart from the fact that Gangs went on to receive many laurels. Now I am glad to be extending my services to him again,” says Prakash. As a music director, he recalls being given the utmost freedom. “It is always a pleasure to work with someone who lets you do your thing and believes in you, and Anurag is one of them. He gives us complete freedom and has full confidence on us.”

While G.V. has wrapped up six songs for the film, he is now currently working on the background score. “Ugly is a true blue gangster movie; we have completed all the six songs. The film also has an item number.”
How different was it to create music for Ugly after period films, like Bharathiraja’s Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum and Bala’s Paradesi?  “Both Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum and Paradesi have a completely different feel — we have used folk to bring out the essence of these being pre-independent films. But Ugly is a gritty gangster film and has a different feel altogether.”

While G.V. has taken everyone under his musical spell, the music director will also prove his versatility by donning grease paint. “At the moment I will be acting in A.R. Murugadoss’s film. In terms of music, I have Vijay’s Thalaiva and have over six to seven other movies lined up,” he adds modestly.
