From the cerebral world of scriptwriting for films in Mumbai, to facing the camera, not in Mumbai but in faraway Kerala, Natasha Sahgal has come a long way indeed!
Despite her acting debut, Mumbai girl Natasha Sahgal maintains that acting is not her cup of tea. She would much rather wield the pen. But whoever says life gives you what you want or deserve? Natasha was the scriptwriter for Bejoy Nambiar’s David and it was this connection that was instrumental in bringing her to Malayalam films, as an actress in Amen. “Lijo Jose, the director of Amen, is a friend of Bejoy’s and co-incidentally Lijo was involved with directing a part of the MTV Rush series that Bejoy directed, in which I played the lead role! Lijo liked my acting and asked me to be a part of his film. I very casually agreed without even hearing the script!”
Although facing the camera for a film was new to Natasha, she is not a novice when it comes to acting. Natasha is an active theatre actor and admits, “Theatre is my first love and I have done a lot of plays but acting in films was an unexpected fillip.” The livewire scriptwriter confesses that acting is a boring profession, particularly the long wait between shots.
Ask her about her acting experience in Amen and she says, “I was never tense about my acting. I knew the director and the DOP, so it was more like a family affair. I play a French girl, so I have to speak the language but am allowed to make mistakes in the pronunciation.”
Scriptwriting may be what she enjoys most but she is not averse to accepting good offers in Malayalam. Any takers?
